About Me

Hi, I'm Sukie Gao — you may know me online as Sukie Chinese on Instagram and YouTube. I grew up in Beijing and currently split my time between Beijing and Shanghai. For several years I worked as a Chinese-language teacher to foreigners — both inside China and abroad, including in the United States — which is where most of my interest in folk customs, the lunar calendar, and naming traditions comes from. Teaching pushed me to know the “why” behind the language, not just the grammar.

The Chinese Gender Calendar is one of those traditions that comes up at every family dinner and friend's baby announcement. As more people I knew started having babies, I noticed how messy the English-language information online was. Lunar age was rarely explained correctly. Charts were presented as scientific tools when they're really cultural folklore. The history was often invented.

That's why I started ChineseGenderCalendar.org. I wanted a place where the tradition is shared with respect, the math is right, the cultural context is real, and the “this is for fun, not science” line is never blurred. The anecdotes on this site are observations from cousins, friends, and former students — not details about my own family. I prefer to keep my personal life private; the content here is what I have watched Chinese families do, more than what I have done myself.
