Planning a pregnancy
Start with when to conceive, then the chart page for the year you are planning, for example 2027. Our ovulation guide explains what timing can and cannot do.

The Two Inputs, in One Minute
Every guide on this site comes back to the same two numbers, so here they are in brief.
The mother's lunar age at conception is the row. In the traditional count a baby is 1 at birth and everyone gains a year together at Chinese New Year. So lunar age is the lunar year of conception, minus the lunar year of birth, plus one; a date before that year's Chinese New Year belongs to the previous lunar year. As a shortcut, it is the Western age plus two from Chinese New Year until the mother's birthday, and plus one from her birthday until the next Chinese New Year.
The lunar month of conception is the column. Lunar months start on a new moon and last 29 or 30 days, counted from Chinese New Year. They fall on different Western dates every year, and some years add a leap month: 2025 had a leap sixth month and 2028 has a leap fifth. The chart itself never changes; our guide to whether the calendar changes every year shows how much the dates do.
What the Evidence Says
The chart is folklore, and we say so on every page. The largest test of it applied the chart to 2,840,755 Swedish births and found its predictions matched the baby's sex no better than chance (Villamor et al., 2010). A baby's sex is set at fertilization by the X or Y chromosome in the sperm, which a calendar cannot see. For a real answer, NIPT blood testing and the anatomy scan are the reliable routes. We still think the chart is a lovely tradition to share, as long as everyone knows it is a game.
How We Check Our Facts
Every lunar date on this site comes from the Hong Kong Observatory's Gregorian-Lunar conversion tables, and every study is linked to its PubMed or publisher record. In October 2026 we rechecked the whole site against those sources. We corrected our calculator's 2025 lunar months, which had missed that year's leap month, and its lunar-age rule, which had used a shortcut that was wrong for part of every year. We also corrected several research citations that had been misdated or linked to the wrong paper. Where we change something that matters, we say so on the page.
